A Peek at our Week:

February Birthdays: Happy Birthday to Talia and Fiona! We enjoyed celebrating our friends and wish them joyful celebrations!

Show and Tell: Brooklyn and Isaiah were up for their Show and Tell this week.
Brooklyn got us started showing off her baby dolls. It was easy to see that she absolutely loves them. She talked about how she plays with them and mentioned that they sleep on a bunk bed. Isaiah brought us a stuffed seal that represents a real seal living in the Pacific. Isaiah's seal was tracked all the way to Alaska at one point. Ms. Ani, Isaiah's mom, came by to show the App that tracks his seal. The class was fascinated!
Family Tree: We were so happy to have Deen and his mom tell us about their family tree! We learned that all of Deen's
family lives right here on St. Croix. He
was even brave enough to preform a little of a Palestinian dance and the class learned that he learned the dance from his family at a wedding. "And where did they learn?" they asked. We're hearing some great questions and learning so much about family traditions and cultures. If your child did not bring a family tree, we're happy to see it any time! Check the Family Tree tab for instructions.
Black History Month/Art: We continued to learn about
Black History month, this time focusing on the artist by the name of Alma Thomas. Her art is so colorful, the class was admiring several of her pieces and wondered if they would be able to do something like that. Alma Thomas is the first black painter to have her work on display at the White House. On Friday, during our art time, and inspired by what they had learned about Alma Thomas, everyone tried to make their own masterpiece. They discovered that it truly takes a lot of patience to create something original.
MATH: What do you know about three dimensional shapes?  We ended unit 5 focusing on 2D or flat shapes and welcomed unit 6 learning about 3D or Solid shapes. This week we focused on the cube, sphere, and cylinder. Please see attachment for an overview of Unit 6.

A Peek At Our Week:

Star Student: Fiona was our Star Student. She is currently 5 years old, but will be celebrating her 6th birthday on February 29th...oops. We have a leap year baby! Her favorite color is purple and her favorite food is pizza. In her free time, she enjoys playing, swimming, and making crafts. Her favorite sport is soccer. When Fiona grows up she would like to be an astronomer. Reach for the stars, Fiona!
The 100th Day of School! We made it to the 100th Day and celebrated by showing off our collection of 100 things and,
of course, counting to 100! The PreK class also came by to enjoy our "museum". Despite the busy weekend, we had a wonderful and creative collection!
MATH: Sorting, Comparing, Composing & Decomposing Shapes.  One week we say goodbye to shapes and then the next they are back again! We reviewed the flat (2D) shapes and all of the Work Places that were introduced last week. We also had a lot of fun playing "What shape am I thinking of?". Students had to ask questions that would help eliminate shapes that were not "it". All questions asked about a
⮞⮞Black History Month: Spotlight on Simone Biles. With the Winter Olympics on, it seemed like perfect timing to learn about this absolutely astounding athlete. Simone Biles is true testament that hard work and dedication can overcome obstacles. The class watched some of her routines with wide eyes and mouth open. They were interested in learning about how much she has to 'practice' and everyone agreed that she works very, very hard.
Chinese/Lunar New Year:  With the Lunar New Year having started on February 17th, we took a bit of time to read some books about the holiday, learned a little about the animals on the Chinese Zodiac calendar, and the legend of why the cat was not included among the twelve. On Friday, we made Dragons which are meant to be lucky and ward off any danger.

  • NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 16h for Presidents Day. Enjoy the AgFair!!
  • 100th Day of School is on Tuesday, February 17th.  Please send 100 small items (for example: paper clips, rubber bands, rice, beans, etc...surprise me!). Help your child count out the 100 items and place them in a Ziploc bag (if you want to get really creative, items can be glued to paper or cardboard...or?) - whatever you can manage will be great!
  • NEXT SHOW and TELL will be on Monday, February 23rd: Brooklyn and Isaiah. Please bring one item from home to show to the class.
  • FOLDERS: Please check these and remove all papers.
  • Bloomz: Please check the Bloomz App for reminders and the latest photos - in the “February 2026” album.

A Peek At our Week:

Star Student: Talia was our Star Student. She currently 5 years old, but will be
celebrating her 6th birthday on February 24th! Her favorite color is pink and her favorite foods are pate and pizza. In her free time, she enjoys dancing, modeling, traveling and playing. Her favorite sport is soccer. When Talia grows up she would like to be a doctor, chef, and/or realtor. Go for it!
Show and Tell: This week is was Fiona and Nicholas' turn to show something special to the class. Fiona was very clever and made her "one" item, a
collection! A collection of teddy bears, to be exact. Each one had a little backstory and Fiona told each story well and was then prepared to answer questions. Nicholas brought a remote control car, gifted to him by friends of his dad. Though Nicholas was shy about talking about his car, but was happy to demonstrate how it worked. Of course everyone was excited to watch it go!

MATH: Constructing and Drawing Shapes.  After our deep dive into 2D (flat) last week, we spent this week using those shapes in four new Work Places! The first one Shapes & Spinners Graphing, gives students the opportunity to trace and draw shapes. The second, Pattern Block Designs, shows students how to make designs using Pattern Blocks. Spin & Count Shapes, our third new Work Place again has students tracing shapes and then counting how many they got. And finally, Hungry Caterpillars is a fun Work Place (game) that uses three different pattern block shapes to complete the caterpillar. Next we’ll have a chance to really become familiar with all of the Work Places. The 100th Day of School is just 1 school day away!

Sunny the Bus: The bus is used by JS Therapies as a mobile occupational therapy bus. Everyone had a turn to spend some time exploring on the bus and had a great time. They were climbing, swinging, balancing and so much more. Ms. Julie Summer explained to the class that all the activities on the bus help make our bodies stronger and can teach certain skills, while having fun.

Celebrating Valentine's Day: There was so much excitement in the air this week,
all because of Valentine's Day. On Friday, aside from making special cards for loved ones, everyone also had a chance to exchange Valentine's. Everyone received quite an overwhelming amount of goodies. It was sweet to see each student hand a Valentine's bag to a classmate - everyone was so polite and so patient! Thank you to Talia's mom for bringing cupcakes for our celebration. Also thank you everyone for showering Ms. Cerni and Mr. Daniel with so much love!

Kindergarten News - Week of February 2nd

We have had 94 days of school!

Announcements/Reminders:

  • SHOW and TELL on Monday (February 9th): Fiona and Nicholas. Please bring one item from home to show to the class.
  • VALENTINE'S DAY is in one week! We will celebrate (of course!) next Friday, February 13th.  Please find attached to the email, a list of students and teachers in the ELC. Though your child is certainly not expected to bring something for ALL children in the ELC, I do ask that all children in Kindergarten are included. It is so sad to be left out.  If you have a gift back that you could bring - this has worked well in the past to put Valentine's in. I have a few white ones, if you don't have anything. Please send  Valentines by Wednesday, February 11th. This will give us time to sort through all of them and make the actual day a bit easier and enjoyable for all. Thanks so much for your support.
  • FOLDERS: Please check these and remove all papers.

A Peek At Our Week:

Show and Tell:

We had three wonderful Show and Tell presentations this week! First, Crucian Christmas Festival Duchess 2025-2026 (she said it each time and with stumbling once!), Talia, wore her beautiful crown and her sash and talked about her experience being in the pageant and about what some of her responsibilities have included so far. Then Kinnick brought his remote control truck. The class was especially curious to see the "inside" of the truck and, of course, a demonstration of what the truck could do. Kinnick showed that he is a skilled 'driver'! Last, but not least, Olivia showed her very cool bicycle. She talked about how she competed in the Great Pumpkin Junior Duathlon, where she won a medal for best time in her category. Her classmates were impressed by the lack of training wheels and asked her how she learned. Olivia said she taught herself and then practiced! Awesome job everyone. We now look forward to Fiona and Nicholas' Show and Tell next Monday.

Reading Buddies: Our 4th grade Reading Buddies were happy that all were

present this week. Kindergarten was excited to be hosting their buddies and enjoyed being able to select some of the books.

MATH: Circles, Squares, Triangles & Rectangles - oh, my! The week was spent exploring two dimensional shapes. We talked about different attributes and sorted them using ‘shape sorting cards’. The class practiced sorting by shape, size, color, curved line, straight line, etc. By the end of the week we said goodbye to shapes and hello to a new Work Place. On our Geoboard Shapes Work Place, students will practice copying certain shapes using rubber bands, and recording the shape on a separate sheet, using a ruler to make really straight lines. In addition to our regular Math class, there is a lot going on in our Number Corner. Starting a new month means becoming familiar with a new pattern. We have also been counting our days in school and the class has realized that we are very, very close to the 100th Day of School!

Agricultural Fair/Art: Our art project focused entirely on the GHCDS AgFair booth. The project was inspired by the book 'Tortoises' Dream' by Joanna Troughton, in which animals go in search of a tree that bares a wonderful variety of fruit. Kindergartners talked about their favorite fruit and vegetables and made colorful representations to hang on the tree in the GHCDS booth.
